Showmanship still exists in a world full of disposable goods.

Joe Ades sells inexpensive useful products and makes a good living at it to boot. Though his style is often associated with Grafters, his work ethic isn’t.

Reorganizing for the new year and a new economy

As 2008 comes to a close, it’s time to make the annual organizational adjustments to the websites in order to improve efficiency. I like to do this at the end of each year because the holidays provide for a bit of breathing room from the responsibilities of client projects.

Any webmaster will tell you it’s difficult to manage large numbers of websites. This problem is compounded by the fact that each change you make to organization can possibly lead to new issues. For example consolidating your blog and website may lead to broken links, or images. Or your website might contain too many different concepts, reducing your search engine rankings and making it difficult to find pages to edit.

The strategy that I am implementing this year is to completely separate the different aspects of the business in order to provide a better marketing presentation.

Saler.com is now nothing more than a portal to the other sides of the business, allowing me to focus on placing web design information on the Design & Development & Training site your-propeller-head.com, Free Internet Marketing & Development resources on your-propeller-head.org, Royalty Free Graphics on purelysupp.com, Book software & Equipment Store on purelysupp.net, and Website Templates on purelysupp.org.

This places each aspect of the business in it’s own website. The trick is to ensure that each item you add to a website goes on an appropriate website.

Reduce your tax liability – update your software now

We are hearing a lot about consumer spending being needed to waken a sleeping economy. Of course most of us aren’t buying it, but there are several reasons to upgrade your software now:

1) If the economy is really tanking, we are all going to need to tighten our belts; why not upgrade when times aren’t so lean?

2) Updates tend to improve efficiency, and by keeping your software up to date today you may save untold hours of work tomorrow. This is time that can be used to make money not loose money by putting the rest of your work on hold.

I just re-learned this lesson myself; I have been using an older version of Quick Books Enterprises that I got an incredible deal on several years ago. So I thought I would save time on my taxes this year by upgrading to the newest version of Quick Books Pro and then Turbo Tax could import the profit and loss information for my deductions. After installing Quick Books Pro, I discover that it won’t import data from Quick Books Enterprise Solutions. Turns out I’ve been using an old version of a piece of software designed for large companies, so it can’t be imported into the small business Quick Books Pro. To manually transfer my invoices and expenses would take a few weeks of 9 to 5 work. So, unfortunately I’ll be doing the taxes manually this year, but starting next year no more enterprises solutions!

3) Take the tax write off. If you are using the software to run your business, it’s a business deduction. Claiming these deductions can add up. Sometimes it’s a matter of a few dollars increasing your tax liability by a few hundred.

Interesting to watch and a great way to get some viral publicity.

Adam's Block

Check out www.AdamsBlock.com

I live in a neighborhood in San Francisco that has some pretty interesting things go on every day. This camera is not a reflection of me or my way of life but it’s showing the view from my apartment on Taylor Street in San Francisco. My block never sleeps and there is noise at all hours of the night. It’s most interesting between 7PM-3AM and during weekends. Thanks for watching
